DaChan Bay Terminals Becomes the First Terminal in China to Achieve 100% Electrification for Internal Haulage Tractors

29 May 2026

DaChan Bay Terminals today (29 May 2026) announced the full electrification of its in-yard tractor fleet following the delivery of 27 battery-swap tractors to replace the current LNG-powered units in the fleet. This milestone makes it the first container terminal in China to operate a 100% electric tractor fleet. This achievement further reinforces DaChan Bay Terminals’ leadership in green port development.

Compared to conventional diesel-powered tractors, electric tractors offer significant advantages. They deliver strong heavy-load performance while substantially reducing operating noise, improving both the terminal working environment and the surrounding community. Equipped with regenerative braking technology, the tractors can recover energy during braking to recharge their batteries, enhancing overall energy efficiency. Once fully deployed, the electric fleet is estimated to reduce direct carbon emissions by approximately 5,000 tonnes annually, providing strong support for Shenzhen’s dual decarbonisation goals.

A ceremony was held to mark the occasion, attended by representatives from shareholder companies, internal haulage contractors, and the battery-swapping infrastructure partner. Brian Yeung, Managing Director of DaChan Bay Terminals said: “We sincerely thank the Government and all our partners for their strong support and close collaboration, as well as our shareholders for their vision and long-standing commitment. This milestone is a shared achievement that we are proud to celebrate together. Looking ahead, we will continue to expand the use of clean energy, and advance toward smarter and zero-carbon operations, contributing to the development of a world-class green port cluster in the GBA.”

After the ceremony, guests joined a live demonstration of electric charging and battery swapping operations, allowing them to experience firsthand the efficiency and convenience of green energy technologies.

To support the efficient operation of the electric fleet, DaChan Bay Terminals has completed the phased construction of electric charging and battery swapping facilities. These are equipped with automated rapid battery-swapping systems, intelligent management capability, and multiple safety protection mechanisms. Each battery swap can be completed within five minutes, ensuring uninterrupted 24-hour terminal operations. The project provides a robust and reliable energy infrastructure, fully supporting the electrification of the tractor fleet.

As a key player in the Port of Shenzhen, DaChan Bay Terminals has long been committed to green and sustainable development. As early as 2007, it became the world’s first container terminal to fully adopt electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes. The complete electrification of its terminal tractors once again demonstrates its continued leadership in energy conservation and emissions reduction in the port industry.
