Press Release

DaChan Bay Terminals’ Shore Power System Starts Operation

24 January 2017

On 22 January 2017, “OOCL TAIPEI” berthed at DaChan Bay Terminals (the Terminal) as scheduled, and behind the scene crew members on board and terminal staff were busy preparing for an important moment---the commencement of operation of the Terminal’s shore power supply system.

At 22:00, it was confirmed that DaChan Bay Terminals’ shore power system had successfully supplied power to the vessel, marking another milestone for the Terminal which has advanced a big step forward in its commitment to building a Green Port.

DaChan Bay Terminals started the shore power system project in response to Shenzhen municipal government’s Five-Year-Plan of Building Low-carbon Green Port in Shenzhen. During project design and construction, the Terminal had received great support and guidance from all levels of government bodies including Shenzhen Municipal and Bao An District Government.  With the shore power system, air quality can be improved with vessels switching off its auxiliary engine which will reduce the carbon emission. At the same time, the working environment in the vessel engine room can be largely improved during maintenance with noise reduction.

DaChan Bay Terminals is committed to environmental protection and has taken it into consideration throughout all phases of its development including terminal design, construction and operation.  As one of the first container terminals in the world to deploy a full fleet of electricity-powered RTGs, it also adopts many other environment protection measures such as LNG tractors, innovation in equipment energy saving and resources utilization…etc.  The Terminal’s efforts have been recognized, and in 2014 and 2015 it has been awarded with the highest honour, Environment Credibility and Integrity Company, in the environment credit rating conducted by The Shenzhen People’s Living Environment Commission, making it the only terminal in Shenzhen to have obtained this award for two consecutive years.

With its ISO14001 environmental management system, DaChan Bay Terminals will continue to seek for improvement in this area, making its contribution to the environment and the economic development of the region.
