DaChan Bay Terminals Receives another 4 Dual-hoist Tandem-lift Quay Cranes to Handle the World’s Biggest Vessels in Foreseeable Future

15 October 2008

Being the first container terminal in South China that adopts a full fleet of dual-hoist tandem-lift quay cranes (QCs), DaChan Bay Terminals received 4 more QCs these 2 weeks, making a total of 12 QCs at the Terminal to provide excellent service to its customers.

These dual-hoist tandem-lift QCs can simultaneously handle two 40-foot containers or four 20-foot containers with a total laden weight of 80 metric tonnes.  Their outreach is 67 metres and able to handle 24 across containers. This means these QCs can serve the world’s widest container vessels in the foreseeable future, as the current widest vessel is 22 containers across.  In addition, the wide rail gauge of the QCs of 35 metres allows 8 lanes for tractors.  All these enable greater operational efficiency.

All the 12 QCs are of the same model and are purchased from Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co. Ltd (ZPMC). In line with the development of DaChan Bay Terminals, the first batch of 8 QCs was delivered in 2007; 2 more were delivered in early October 2008 and the remaining 2 units arrived at the Terminal today.

The full fleet of dual-hoist tandem-lift QCs is one of the showcases of DaChan Bay Terminals, which is designed and equipped to handle the world’s current and future biggest vessels. Mr. Andrew Milliken, Chief Executive Officer of DaChan Bay Terminals, emphasized: “When we placed the order for these 12 QCs with ZPMC in 2006, we were determined to provide efficient operational service to the biggest vessels in the world. We have been using this model of QCs since the Terminal opened in December 2007 and feedbacks on the QCs are positive. We will purchase more dual-hoist tandem-lift QCs for future development of DaChan Bay Terminals."
